Custom Wire Racks & Baskets

Have you ever wondered how, exactly, they get donated bone tissue clean, before the surgeon inserts it into a needy patient? Neither had I, until today. I haven’t investigated the entire process, but I did find a company that makes the 316 Stainless Steel basket with an electropolished finish that holds the tissue while it’s being cleaned: Three M Tool, out of York, Pennsylvania. I happened across this fascinating bit of trivia while browsing their website and flipping through their project idea slideshow. The slideshow is, essentially, a gallery of custom projects, complete with photos, specs, and explanations. Its purpose is to, hopefully, catch your eye with a basket that looks and sounds like one that you need, or, at least, pretty close. Once you find a near-match, you contact the company, and they’ll tweak the design to make exactly what you need. They design and manufacture all kinds of custom wire racks and baskets–not your run-of-the-mill, buy-it-at-the-nearest-Michael’s craft basket, but the kind of racks and baskets you’d use for cleaning, dipping, spraying, and otherwise coating everything from airplane parts to surgical instruments, or whatever else needs to be cleaned, dipped, sprayed, or otherwise coated. Just in their project ideas catalogue, they offer all kinds of lids, latches, and handles, and they’re willing to work with you to incorporate all kinds of other options that you could request for your custom work. Obviously, people cleaning a bone tissue sample will have different needs than those degreasing a machined casting or those dipping a circuit board. Three M Tool covers al those bases and more.

Besides all the custom work, Three M Tool also has a whole line of carbon and stainless steel baskets, also wire mesh, that are pre-fabricated and ready for purchase through their e-commerce site, AnySizeBasket.com. Nice thing is, they have no requirements for a minimum order, so you can buy as few or as many baskets as you need, in any of the various sizes or shapes. Besides size and shape, they offer different materials, as well as different kinds of handles, to make it possible for you to find the basket to fit your project, as closely as possible, without the custom work.

There are lots of options. Name your need and, if Three M Tool doesn’t have a design that meets it, have them make a rack or basket to your specifications.

By the way, in case you’re in the market for one, the “Basket for Medical Tissue Samples” is Three M Tool part number CT-100505-1. It’s designed to “hold donor bone tissue for cleaning in a sterile ultrasonic cleaning cycle,” with all kinds of features that make it perfectly suited for the job–custom-made to fit your machine.
