Pink Tile Just Has to Go!
There was a time when a bathroom done entirely in pink, black, and white tile was the coolest of the cool. Of course, those were also the days when the most fashionable guys had ruffles on their dress shirts and the girls’ hair managed astonishing feats.
Times have changed, and, in many cases, for the better. Personally, I believe that the changes in bathroom and kitchen decor have definitely been a change for the better. No matter how hard I’ve tried, for as long as I’ve been aware of decorations, I have never been able to understand exactly what people saw in the pink tile, and, despite my instinctive assumptions, the people that used this particular color scheme were not only a certain kind of people–a certain class or a certain profession.
Consider, for example, my in-laws, who have very good taste in decorating. They are in the middle of having my husband redo their master bathroom, and the current phase of the remodel is pulling off a whole heap of pink accent tiles and replacing them with updated decorative tiles (slightly Aztec in one area and white-on-white relief in another). Thankfully, my husband is very patient and very precise, so pulling a diamond design’s worth of pink tiles out of a tiled wall, without disturbing the white tiles that are staying, is not a problem. My grandparents, on the other hand, have a guest bathroom (once the kids’ bathroom) that is all done in pink and black tile, from the floor to halfway up the walls, and they haven’t said a word about remodeling. Somehow, that project just hasn’t made the top of the priority list.
In both of these cases, the current home owners are the same ones who built the bathrooms, in the middle of additions they were having constructed, and they chose the decorating scheme. In other situations, people inherit the now-dated color schemes, most often in the bathrooms and kitchens. We managed to purchase a home with a teal tub and shower enclosure in the master bathroom. Until we’re ready to remodel the master bathroom, we’re doing some creative decorating! I wonder, sometimes, how our infant daughter will respond to a tub some color other than teal blue. She may not know what the new, white monstrosity is!
